MUNGANBANA WEBSITE MY WORKSHOPS PAGE
Munganbana is available to do artist-in-residence or workshops in Cairns at your school, workplace or resort. He is sort after because he is passionate about what he does and works well with children and adults. He is reliable, enthusiastic and brings a community-minded approach to his creativity. He is happy to pass on his skills and knowledge of art and culture. His can-do attitude means he often exceeds expectations.
In 2017, he is working on projects at Holy Cross Catholic Primary School Trinity Parkincluding showing the children how to design and make shields and murals. He did extensive work at St Andrew’s Catholic College in Redlynch in 2014-2015 which included helping the students design and paint a large mural, designing and making shields and teaching on Aboriginal culture and spirituality. He has done occasional workshops at St Gerard Majella Primary School Woree and St Mary’s Catholic College Cairns.
One of the significant contributions he made at St Andrew’s was to build a campfire as an outdoor teaching area where he displayed native fruits and plants and taught on Aboriginal culture. Damper and tea were also shared around it. Also it provided a place where exchange students from overseas could have a cultural experience.
One of the students wrote to the local newspaper, The Cairns Post, outlining how touched she and other students were because of his caring manner.
Munganbana has also done art workshops at a number of state schools over the years, both primary and secondary in Cairns and Innisfail. This includes talks on NAIDOC as well as art workshops.
As he has a particular interest in reconciliation and community art, he has used Reconciliation Week in May and NAIDOC Week a number of times over the years to paint a large canvas of Australia and have the community come into his gallery and put their hands in paint of different colours and then put it on the painting to declare Hands Up For Reconciliation. This has been self-funded. He has also gone to a number of schools and done the same. An Italian film crew filmed him doing this at his gallery one year.
