Description
I am fascinated by the platypus, or gugula in Jirrbal, which is a sight I don’t often see. I watched as it swam in the freshwater stream over the stony bottom with its webbed feet. It can stay underwater a few minutes at a time. As it swam, it sent ripples through the water. It has a duck-like bill, a paddle-like tail and sharp claws. It sleeps during the day in a burrow near the water’s edge and comes out at night to feed and sifts some of its food from the mud and water through its bill.
